- Bariatric surgery helps people lose weight by surgically restricting the amount of food a person can eat or changing the way a person can absorb nutrients. This type of surgery is performed if other methods, such as diet and exercise, are not successful. Bariatric surgery is for people who are severely obese or have other obesity-related conditions like sleep apnea or diabetes. Bariatric surgeons have completed additional fellowship training in bariatric and minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.
- General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the abdominal cavity which includes the stomach, colon, liver, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas. General surgeons are also trained to operate on the Alimentary tract (esophagus and related organs). They deal with diseases involving skin, breast, soft tissue and hernias, too. General surgeons are trained to diagnose conditions and recommend the most appropriate treatment in coordination with a patient’s primary care physician. It may or may not include a recommendation for surgery.
