Specialty Care
Breastfeeding Medicine
Breastfeeding medicine focuses on the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding and human lactation. Those trained primarily in this field are known as lactation specialists and consultants. Physicians, often pediatricians, obstetrician-gynecologists or family practitioners who are trained in lactation, provide care for nursing mothers and their children. This branch of medicine is slightly different than other specialties because physicians who practice in this field combine medical and lactation support for both mother and baby, providing care to both patients at the same time. While breast milk is felt to be nature’s first food, breastfeeding does not always come naturally. Breastfeeding is a physiological process that involves both the mother and baby.
We provide specialized breastfeeding care for both mother and baby. Because we are a medical specialty practice and we are seeing both mother and baby as patients in one office visit, we can address and treat any issues that are identified with either the mother and/or the baby. In addition to providing basic lactation care and support, we also provide medical support, guidance and treatment for more complex breastfeeding issues.
We also offer appointments with Trinity Health IHA Medical Group lactation consultants at several area practice locations. Our lactation consultants are all certified nurse practitioners.
