Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is a focused area of cardiology that performs invasive, usually catheter-based, procedures to manage heart disease. Cardiologists normally complete an additional year of training to perform these invasive procedures. Catheter-based procedures are considered minimally invasive and often allow patients to avoid open-heart surgery. Conditions treated through cardiac intervention include ischemic heart disease, valve disease and congenital heart abnormalities.
